Free Resources

The London Archives is a free place for students to study which provide access to world class resources including our Mediatheque, London Picture Archive and our 100,000-volume library on the history of London, alongside printed maps (highlights include facsimiles of the bomb damage map) and microfilm readers.

Archival Research

Students wanting to do primary research will need to register for a History Card with our Archives Officers on site or do this online before they come. Once registered they will be able to order and access documents from our network of strong rooms using our catalogue and more can find out more about this service here.

Group Visits

Alongside supporting independent research and study we are also able to host group visits for academic institutions. Our collections cover the history of London and all its Londoner’s over the last 1000 years so we can cover most topics of study – however we are particularly strong on these themes. Group visits aim to support students in their understanding of what an archive is and how it can support their studies. This is done through the introduction of the concept of the ‘archive’ practical demonstrations of how to use our catalogue and ‘hands on’ document viewings of original material.

Other ways to Learn?

We also offer a core programme of talks and tours which are designed to highlight parts of our collection and deepen understanding of our collections – you can check what’s on here or sign up to our mailing list to be kept up to date.
